Binaural Monitoring for Ambisonics: A Beginner's Guide for Reaper, Cubase & Ableton Live

It's not stereo, it's not surround in the traditional sense — it's a full 3D sound field encoded across four (or more) channels, and your headphones need a binaural decoder to translate that field into something your ears can make sense of.

What You'll Need

  • A First-Order Ambisonic (FOA) B-format audio file — 4 channels (W, X, Y, Z)
  • A free binaural decoder plugin: either the ambiX suite by Matthias Kronlachner or the IEM Plugin Suite (both AmbiX/ACN-SN3D compatible)
  • A pair of headphones (binaural decoding is designed for headphone listening, not speakers)

The Core Concept (Same in Every DAW)

Regardless of which DAW you use, the signal path is the same:

  1. Import your 4-channel B-format file onto a multichannel track
  2. Route all 4 channels into a bus or track that will hold your binaural decoder
  3. Insert the binaural decoder plugin on that bus
  4. Monitor the decoded stereo output on headphones

The tricky part is step 2 — DAWs handle multichannel routing very differently, which is why this guide treats each one separately.


Reaper: The Easiest DAW for Ambisonics

Reaper has native, flexible multichannel routing, which makes it the most beginner-friendly option here.

  1. Create a new track and set it to 4 channels (right-click the track's I/O button, or use Track Properties → Channels).
  2. Import your B-format file onto this track.
  3. Insert your binaural decoder (the ambiX binauralDecoder plugin, or the IEM BinauralDecoder) directly on this track — no separate bus is required.
  4. Make sure the plugin's channel count matches your source. For a 4-channel FOA file, the decoder should be set to receive 4 input channels.
  5. Route the track's output to your Master (stereo) bus as normal, and listen on headphones.

Beginner tip: If the audio sounds thin, mono, or "collapsed" rather than spatial, double-check that your decoder's channel order/normalization setting matches your source file. AmbiX files use ACN channel order with SN3D normalization — if your file was recorded in the older FuMa format, you'll need a channel converter plugin first (also included in the ambiX suite).


Cubase: Working Within Fixed Channel Formats

Cubase is built around fixed-channel bus formats (mono, stereo, 5.1, 7.1, and in recent Pro versions, Ambisonics-specific bus types). The workflow is slightly more structured than Reaper's.

  1. Create a new audio track and, when prompted for the bus configuration, choose a 4-channel (Quadro) or Ambisonics-format bus if your version of Cubase offers one.
  2. Import your B-format file onto this track, making sure all 4 channels map correctly to W, X, Y, Z.
  3. Create a Group Channel with the same 4-channel configuration, and route your track's output to this group.
  4. Insert your binaural decoder plugin on the Group Channel insert slot.
  5. Route the Group Channel to your stereo Output bus.

Beginner tip: If Cubase won't let you create a 4-channel bus directly, check your Audio Connections window (F4) — you may need to manually add a new Group bus with a custom channel configuration before it becomes available as a track routing option.


Ableton Live: The Workaround Approach

Ableton Live's audio tracks are natively limited to mono or stereo, so multichannel B-format audio needs a bit more creative routing than in Reaper or Cubase.

  1. Import your B-format file — Live will typically split it into multiple mono clips or treat it as a multichannel file depending on version and format.
  2. The most reliable approach is to use a Max for Live device that supports multichannel audio (several free Ambisonic Max for Live devices exist for exactly this purpose), since standard Live tracks can't carry a true 4-channel signal end-to-end.
  3. Alternatively, if your decoder plugin is available in a mono-to-binaural "spatializer" form (rather than requiring a full 4-channel B-format input), you can skip true Ambisonic decoding and instead place individual mono sources directly in 3D space using a binaural panner — a simpler starting point if you're not yet working with full soundfield recordings.
  4. Once you have a working signal path, insert your binaural decoder and monitor on headphones as usual.

Beginner tip: If you're just starting out and don't yet need true B-format soundfield work, it's often easier in Live to begin with mono-source binaural panning rather than fighting the DAW's channel limitations. You can graduate to full Ambisonic bus routing later once you're comfortable with the fundamentals — or move that specific project into Reaper, which handles it natively.


Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • No sound / silence: check your channel count matches between source, bus, and decoder plugin.
  • Sounds mono or "stuck in the middle": your channel order or normalization convention likely doesn't match — verify AmbiX (ACN/SN3D) vs. FuMa.
  • Distorted or phasey: confirm you're not accidentally decoding a higher-order file with a first-order-only decoder preset.
  • Works on speakers but not headphones (or vice versa): that's expected — binaural decoding is a completely separate signal path from a speaker-array decoder. Don't use one in place of the other.
